A Bronze statue of ‘Apollo Belvedere’ by Benedetto Boschetti, Rome.
Circa 1850.
Considered by neo-classicists from the 18th Century to be one of the greatest sculptures.
The original was discovered in the 15th Century – put on display in the Vatican in 1511, where it remains.
Rome workshops of Boschetti (1820-1879) were renowned for their exceptional quality in bronze and marble.
Items were produced to satisfy the academic and sophisticated tastes of the gentleman of the grand tour.
The workshops were awarded a medal at the great exhibition of 1851.
