About Us

Discover the long and cultural depth of our history.

Holliday & Sons is a proudly family-run business with a legacy that spans six generations founded in the United Kingdom and cementing themselves in Christchurch for more than seven decades. For many years, we operated from one of the city’s oldest surviving wooden buildings, a two-storey structure featuring its original veranda over the footpath. This historic location housed our showroom downstairs, our office and family history upstairs, and a traditional workshop at the rear.

We have recently relocated to 7 Elgin Street in Sydenham, Christchurch, where our showroom and workshop continue to reflect the traditions and values that have defined our business since 1848. Although the setting is different, our approach remains grounded in authenticity, care, and respect for craftsmanship.

Our workshop is run according to traditional methods, using natural materials and best practices. It is now under the direction of Jason Holliday, the sixth generation of the Holliday family to carry on the knowledge and skills passed down over time. We take great pride in preserving both the physical items and the stories they represent.

At Holliday & Sons, we continue to value the old, appreciate the timeless, and take great satisfaction in restoring beauty and integrity to well-made objects. We welcome you to visit us in Sydenham and experience our enduring dedication to quality and tradition.

FAQ

How do you get that glorious antique shine, oil or wax?

We recommend that oil should never be used on period furniture, as this soaks through the polish and into the timber and creates a surface that the polish can not adhere to. Thus slowly stripping the patina off your piece. Wax (a wax without the silicone) on the other hand is the natural and only way of building a patina that gives that natural glow and long lasting protection .

Do you do valuations on silverware for insurance purposes?

Yes we do feel free to email us with some photos or give us a ring to discuss this in more detail
